Why Tamika supports The Upward Project - “My moms brother was a star football player in college, he went to BC and he was super smart. However, he was 1 out of 8 children, so basically, his mother could not support him while he was there. Imagine going to BC over 50 years ago, you are one of their star football players but you have to compete with rich kids who are not black and you can barely afford to be there. Back then they just did not let black kids in so that's how you know his academics was on point. He could not keep up with the rich white kids and the things they had and the things he needed so he turned to drugs for his comfort and died. My mom tells the story, he could barely afford to even eat there, because there was just no support. Imagine if my uncle had a program like the Upward Project, a program that would give him a laptop, give him career development, an internship, give him a computer, give him a food voucher if he needed food to be in college, talk to someone about his problems living in poverty, he might be alive today. Low-income, high achieving academic students just need one chance. Yes, they get a chance to attend College, but they need a support system or wrap around service to make sure they graduate and The Upward Project is the right Program.”
